The Process Of Equine DNA Testing The Process Of Equine DNA Testing November 8 http://www.nhljetsteamshop.com/Hoodie/ , 2015 | Author: Eula Clarke | Posted in Education
All living things are defined by DNA. It is the blueprint for life because it codes for information on everything from nutrition to reproduction, respiration, and appearance. Biotechnology has been a revolution not only for humans but also for animals. Today, it is possible to predict disease or genetic disorder, establish parentage and predict phenotype in offspring. Such are the uses of equine DNA testing.

There are various why one would like their horse tested. One is to establish parentage before breeding. It is always very crucial to determine pedigree information scientifically before making any breeding decisions. Observation, manual identification and record keeping may not be adequate and are prone to errors.

During breeding, a breeder identifies animals with better performance, endurance or other characteristics that are desirable. It is only DNA technology that can ensure this is done accurately. It also helps determine whether a horse is at risk of developing a certain genetic disease and also to choose some phenotypic characteristics through constructing a genetic profile.

The globe is dotted with numerous animal genetic laboratories where these tests can be carried out. Searching for them online gives a list of several companies located around the world. Most of them have a list of instructions and guidelines on how to collect samples. After samples are collected, they may be sent to the genetic laboratory through the mail from anywhere across the globe.

The prices are different depending on the type and number of tests to be performed. After analysis, the company will send the results to you through email or through an account on their website. They are usually in the form of a chart used to display genetic information, but they will contact you by the telephone to clarify and help you understand the implications for the horse.

The collection of samples is not difficult at all. It all depends on the sample to be collected. Hair samples are the most preferred and are collected by plucking a few strands of the tail or the mane. Cheek cells can be obtained by gently brushing the insides of the cheek using a cheek brush. For blood samples, 3ml is drawn and transferred to an EDTA Vacutainer tube for mailing.

Once inside the laboratory, the first step is to extract DNA. The hair follicle cells are used in the case of hair, and the cheek and blood cells are separated until the nucleus is obtained. Once extraction is complete, specialized genetic methods are used to produce a profile or genotype of the equine through the use of a standard twelve specific gene marker. From each marker, there are two alleles and one is from each parent.

DNA technology has become important in our lives and also that of other living beings on Earth. Breeders are able to determine parentage of a horse from the tests. However, the sire and the dam have to be registered prior to the test in order to match the genes of the foal.

Like any holiday, there are a number of things that might ? occasionally ? go wrong on a cruise. Often the problems that crop up may be outside your control, and cruise travel insurance will offer you some protection, but it is no substitute for common sense and basic precaution.

Excursions on shore when the boat is in port are central to the cruise experience. More often than you?d expect though, holiday makers arrive late back from their time on land to find their boat already pulling out to sea. The problem is how to get them safely aboard without significantly delaying the cruise and accruing significant costs. Cruise Travel insurance policies will often cover ?disaster recovery? and ?missed departure?, but you could find the extra costs of being tardy may come from your own pocket.

Sometimes, the boat will return to the dock if it has only moved a short way off, but this is at the discretion of the captain, the liner company and the harbour. More often, if the liner is still within sight of stranded passengers on the pier, it may slow or stop and then send back a pilot boat or a launch to collect them. The aim then is to get the latecomers alongside and up the side of the liner without waiting too long, and without spilling passengers into the sea. In this situation, you want to avoid dipping into your cruise travel insurance to pay for injuries from a failed boarding attempt.

Don?t Be Left Hanging

In an unplanned boat to boat transfer of this kind you may be urged to jump from one boat to the other, or it may require a tentative ascent up a swinging rope ladder. It should be noted that often the assisting pilottuglaunch boat operator will charge a fee for the service, and indeed cruise operators may choose to penalize for the delay, which likely won?t be covered by cruise insurance. What it will certainly mean is the unwanted attentions of your fellow passengers. In less favourable sea conditions they may cheer your successful arrival on board, but if you?ve caused a significant delay you may have to tolerate jeers such as ?buy a watch? or ?swim for it!?

Worse still is when you miss the boat by such a margin that it is far out of reach. When this happens your only recourse is to arrange your own transport to rejoin the cruise at the next port of call. This could be costly, so it is a good idea to check if your cruise travel insurance covers you for such misadventures, and a better idea to be punctual.

Getting on Board

But there are occasions when late boarders are not welcome on the boat at all. A few days ago (in April 2009) the Italian Crui.
